It has been around 4 years since my last blog and so much has occurred that life whisked me away from being as vocal about my mental health journey. I became tired of the accusation of just craving attention aswell as learning how to battle chronic conditions etc. Every aspect of life is different now and I have just finished my second round of CBT this time attempting to battle a heightened intolerance of uncertainty caused from trauma. There have been some massive breakthroughs in the root causes of some of my fears. Specifically the one that would cause panic attacks for fear of not being around physically to watch the cub grow up. I believe while a common worry of parenthood my maladaptive brain turned it up to 11 because I carry intense guilt from wishing the first year of Cub’s life away because of the magical timeline given to me by doctors and midwives. I wasn’t as present as I should have been…I wasn’t present in the moment with my baby instead I would focus on the fact that according to experts I will be better in 5 months, 4 months one month! News flash, I wasn’t better because unfortunately I had unaddressed issues that sent my central nervous system into overdrive and triggered a mental health crisis alongside chronic health conditions. That’s not all of it, I wish it was but we lost one of my best friends, ironically the one friend who I was the most vocal with when talking about our fears for our health and our children. The cruelest circle of life moment to witness. The pure manifestation of both of our deepest fears! Recently I get moments when I feel that it will be ok even if the worst was to happen but there are moments in which the irrational side is screaming, tonight is one of them.
It’s currently 4:45am and the dawn chorus is chirping away. I am yet to sleep the longest of nights that has seen the most intense health anxiety spirals yes more than one and for more than just myself. I have been poorly again unfortunately mainly due to having to reduce certain vitamin intakes due to a pending surgery which should have taken place last month. However with the NHS on its knees I have to live in hope that the surgery can take place before the situation becomes malignant and much more dangerous (we may cover the whole surgery situation in a different blog who knows.)
Anyway back to this evening. I have yet again another episode of sinusitis aswell as a chest infection. The little man was at his grandparents and came home for bedtime but was in discomfort in his stomach. Cue to some D&V episodes inbetween his naps. We have gone through all bar 1 bed sheet and duvet cover, the cubs favourite teddy has had yet another wash and is currently drying in the airing cupboard. I sent the hubby to bed due to his shift at work tomorrow and stood in as overwatch until a time in which the intrusive thoughts could no longer be hushed. Cue the panic attack! You will never guess over what and while I‘m embarrassed to say, I know that revisiting this in the future will allow me to illustrate my progress. So we are back…
My health anxiety is nicknamed “Karen” she has been around for a day or two due to my current infections and their physicalities. However she was on minimal volume thanks to the work I have put in to address issues. However with the stomach bug situation within the household and the fear of another repeated cyclical vomiting syndrome flare up yet again for the little man and the worries that brought on last time, my brain decided to intrude with a passing thought. A momentary blip of a message in case I had picked up on the threat. Tonight’s new symptom for me was one singular nostril dripping like a tap, instead of acknowledging the chance of my current viral situation being the catalyst “Karen” pipes up with the helpful suggestion of a CSF leak…how the bloody hell is that helpful? While I have other symptoms to show you can bet that while the Cub slept my OCD told me to hold its drink, it knew it was a job for them. They compulsions for reassurance flared and none of them scratched the itch, the need for Google and further information because what if this is a serious situation. I need to become an expert on such a subject because if I miss the signs then it’s on me to keep us alive and safe.
It’s 5am and I can feel my eyes dropping so I am tired enough now to hopefully sleep. I will update further in the morning.
3 hours later I’ve had some kip as has everyone else in the house. While still on high alert I am able to breathe slower. Sometimes a small bit of knowledge is a curse and I absolutely hate my original ambition of becoming a paramedic because it armed me with just enough ammunition to fuel a Karen focussed episode like this evening but with no additional knowledge on how to prove a possible diagnosis. It is exhausting even when you have the ability to sleep! Today will be brought to you by copious amounts of caffeine for me and a diet of dry toast and water for the cub.
